“There are so many disabled and elderly people who feel isolated and alone and are unable to care for themselves, or have positive influences in their life to live it to the fullest in their situations. So many are unable to care enough for themselves and whey they live, they give up on life and settle for less. Daily, you can actually see how much of a difference you can make in someone’s life.”

Sharla G. - HCW

“I think the most rewarding thing about my job is feeling that at the end of the day, I’ve helped the customer I work with in some way. It’s also really rewarding for myself personally because I gain new knowledge and a new experience with each customer I work with. For example, the very first person I provided support to had difficulties with communication. This was very new to me, but it taught me a lot about patience and problem solving.”

Rachel K. - PSW

“I find this job rewarding because I get to know the person I am helping. I get to know them in their home where they are the most comfortable, so I get to know the real person. You do not have to rush through the day. You get to move at their pace and do what they want you to do and how they would like you to do it, all while chatting with them about what they love to talk about. This job is all about them and that is the best thing about this.”

Kaysha S. - HCW

“Home care is my passion and society must know the importance of what we do. At any moment, it could be one of us needing the care we provide. It is the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.”

Erin G. - HCW

“I became a homecare worker in October of 1989. I love the people I’ve been blessed to meet over the years and knowing that I made their lives a little less difficult. This is important work because caring for others is always important work. We’ll all need help someday and it’s good to give back to folks who have already given their share to society.”

Carmen R. - PSW

The Oregon Home Care Commission (expand for more)

In 2000, the citizens of Oregon voted to amend the State Constitution to create the Oregon Home Care Commission.  The Commission is responsible for ensuring the quality of home care services that are funded by the Oregon Department of Human Services for older adults and people with disabilities. The Commission is made up of nine commissioners appointed by the Governor and four who represent the Department of Human Services, the Governor’s Commission on Senior Services, the Oregon Disabilities Commission, and the Oregon Association of Area Agencies on Aging and Disabilities.

The Oregon Home Care Commission is committed to ensuring the following for older adults and people with disabilities:

  • Quality of in-home services and workers
  • Choice of best worker and services to fit each person’s needs
  • Independence to thrive at home and in the community

The Commission supports consumers (employers) and workers by:

  • Offering a Registry available online 24/7 that matches employers with qualified homecare and personal support workers and personal care attendants;
  • Offering free, statewide training classes for homecare and personal support workers and personal care attendants;
  • Offering several certification programs for homecare and personal support workers and personal care attendants;
  • Paying for CPR and First Aid certification;
  • Offering free trainings to employers who hire homecare and personal support workers to help them become successful employers; and
  • Providing workers’ compensation coverage for homecare and personal support workers and personal care attendants
